Initial Scriptural Delve on Revelation

LDS.org search

I'm doing a quick search on the topic of revelation to gather sources on revelation. Here's 3 scriptures that stood out to me on the first page.

Mormon 9:7
And again I speak unto you who deny the revelations of God, and say that they are done away, that there are no revelations, nor prophecies, nor gifts, nor healing, nor speaking with tongues, and the interpretation of tongues;

So many people today believe that God stopped speaking to us after the original Apostles died. This scripture shows us that God will never stop speaking to His children. I believe that He will never stop speaking to us, personally and through prophets, because He will never stop loving us.

Doctrine and Covenants 90:13-14
13 And when you have finished the translation of the prophets, you shall from thenceforth preside over the affairs of the church and the school;
14 And from time to time, as shall be manifested by the Comforter, receive revelations to unfold the mysteries of the kingdom;

An example of direct revelation to the Prophet from God. In some ways, this is progressive revelation, since it happens "from time to time." This means that even prophets receive little pieces of truth at a time, even when it's something great and important such as the organization of the Church. Think about when Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley revealed that we would be building smaller temples throughout the world. It was through lots of small, consistent promptings that he and the Brethren learned what they should do.

Ephesians 3:3
[...] by revelation he made known unto me the mystery [...]

The purpose of revelation is to bring to light things that ordinarily cannot be known. For instance, the existence of God is impossible to know for a fact though science, mathematics, or other empirical methods. Only through direct and personal revelation can His existence be known.

Divine Bread Daily

Following a CES fireside by Elder D. Todd Christofferson, an Apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, counseling college-age students to seek divine bread daily though meaningful scripture study and prayer, I felt rather inspired to start this blog.

My purposes for this blog include:

  • Greater motivation to accomplish daily study.

  • Direction and purpose in my study.

  • Leave an easily searchable record of my thoughts and impressions. In effect, this becomes a study journal.

  • A simple way to teach others the principles of the gospel on a daily basis.

  • Opportunities for worldwide missionary work through the miracle of the internet.

  • I have been meaning for some time now to write a book on revelation. I believe that this blog can aid me in motivation and direction to accomplish that goal this year.
